LAS VEGAS – Santa Clara men's rowing opened the 2018 season at the Las Vegas Invitational over the weekend. The Broncos raced Oregon State and Dartmouth, competing with their V8, 2V8, and 3V8 boats. Washington was also at the event.
The Broncos were schedule to have more races Saturday afternoon, but strong headwinds cancelled the races.
"We have a tremendous amount respect for Washington, Dartmouth, and Oregon State and to be able to see crews of this caliber early in the season is important for us," Santa Clara head coach Jay Farwell said. "Typically we don't see these crews until IRA's and to get a baseline early as to where we stand is really important for us as we try to break into that next level."
The Broncos weren't able to win any of their races but the event showed where they stand and what needs to be done.
"I think the obvious takeaway from the Vegas trip is that there is lot of work ahead of us if we want to compete with these crews," Farwell said. "I thought our guys handled the tough conditions reasonably well and was really impressed with our coxswain group in the challenging conditions."
Now Santa Clara heads to San Diego to face UC San Diego, San Diego, and Gonzaga Sunday and Monday.
"We have another long road trip this coming weekend where we get an early look at our Western Sprint rivals at the Western Sprint Challenge on Mission Bay in San Diego," Farwell said. "We will be racing each team in a dual format with one race Sunday in the late afternoon, one early Monday morning, and the last one late Monday morning."
