Western Sprints Up Next for Men's Rowing

Western Sprints Schedule

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's rowing heads to Western Sprints Saturday where they will try to qualify for the IRA National Championships for the fourth time in five years. The top two finishers in each race will qualify for IRAs.

"Since completing WIRAs, we have had three weeks of solid training and preparation for Western Sprints," Santa Clara head coach Jay Farwell said. "All of our work this year has been in preparation for Western Sprints - it is a day of reckoning for us. Our single-minded goal during racing season is to get better each race and to this point we have done that pretty well.  Each boat is in a good spot and is looking forward to the opportunity of qualifying for the IRA National Championship Regatta scheduled for the end of May in Sacramento. This is going to be a very competitive race in the Varsity 8 event as us, UC San Diego, and Gonzaga were within 1.5 seconds of each other at WIRAs and you can never count out San Diego. It is going to come down to execution, desire, and relentless pursuit for the finish line. We will be ready to go."

The Broncos had a good showing in their final tune-up at WIRAs April 27-28. The Varsity 4 and Novice 4 both took home victories with the Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8, and 3rd Varsity 8 boats all coming in second.

After the races, four rowers were named All-WIRA. Misha Hindery and Grant Findlay were first team picks with Grant Steffen and Nick Szigeti taking home honorable mention.
