SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's rowing completes its season at the IRA National Championships May 31 through June 2 at Lake Natoma. The Varsity 8 will race at 8:20 a.m. and the 2nd Varsity 8 will race at 9:30 a.m. Friday.
The Broncos Varsity 8 qualified for IRAs for the fourth time in five years by coming in second at the Western Sprints May 18. The 2nd Varsity 8 also came in second and qualified for the national championships.
"Our team is looking forward to a return to the IRA National Championship Regatta after a year's hiatus," Santa Clara head coach Jay Farwell said. "We are taking a Varsity 8 and 2nd Varsity 8 to compete against the best crews in the county. It is a great opportunity for a number of guys to experience the IRA setting and the tremendous speed and competitiveness of the crews attending the IRA Regatta. For half of the team, this will be their first trip to the IRA so it will certainly be an impactful and eye-opening experience. I am really proud of the this team for getting us back to the big show and this will certainly be important for our development for next season. We have four freshmen and three sophomores spread between our two 8's so there is some youth that will certainly have an opportunity to step up to the challenge over the upcoming three days of racing."
In addition to the young roster, the Broncos are sending off their seniors on the right foot.
"This will be the last collegiate racing opportunity for four of our seniors (Grant Findlay, Misha Hindery, Tatianna Schluep and Grant Steffen) who have had a significant impact on our team over the last four years," Farwell said. "I am thankful that this group will get to say that there last collegiate race was at the IRA Regatta."
