Men's Rowing Finishes Season at IRA National Championships

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Santa Clara men's rowing finished the 2019 season at the IRA National Championships over the weekend. The Broncos Varsity 8 finished 22nd in the nation with the 2nd Varsity 8 coming in at 23rd.

"I can't say enough about this year's team and how it all came together at the end of the season at the IRA Regatta," Santa Clara head coach Jay Farwell said. "Both boats competed at a very high level and had very respectable finishes. I am particularly proud of our four seniors who competed at their last IRA Regatta (Coxswain Tatianna Schluep, Grant Findlay, Misha Hindery, and Grant Steffen) and have led this team to a 22nd national ranking which is the second best ranking in our program's history."

The V8 performed its best in the final race, topping conference rival UC San Diego as well as Hobart.

"The Varsity 8 was extremely consistent all weekend which really served us well in the finals," Farwell said. "We didn't have a bad race and we just focused on making each race a foundation for the next one. The guys performed at their highest level all year and did not get overwhelmed or intimidated by the circumstance of the IRA Regatta. In our final on Sunday, we had our best race of the year. It was a great way to end the year and it certainly creates some very positive momentum for the 2019-20 season."

The 2V8 also performed well despite several young rowers.

"The 2nd Varsity 8 also had a very solid performance," Farwell said. "This was a very young boat for us so to have the freshmen and sophomores experience the IRA Regatta and the caliber of rowing at the national championship regatta was critical to this team development for next season."

"I am extremely proud of our team and the quality of effort and work they put in this year," Farwell said. "All of the returners know that there is a lot of work to do over the summer to prepare for next season and we have a really good recruiting class coming in so I am already looking forward to the 2019-20 rowing season."
