The Santa Clara University men's golf team opened the spring season with a fourth-place finish at the Carson Daly Invitational, hosted by West Coast Conference rival Loyola Marymount at the Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Santa Clarita.
Santa Clara carded a 304 in cold and windy conditions today and finished with a three-round total of 895, just four strokes off the winning scorecard. Holy Names won in a playoff, besting Grand Canyon University, after both squads carded 891s. The Master's College finished just one stroke back for third place. Santa Clara was the only squad in the nine-team field that did not card a round in the 80s through the three rounds.
Four Broncos placed in the top 25, led by Jonathan Edwards, who posted his second top-10 finish of the season, placing 10th with a 221, eight strokes over par. Jong Yoon tied for 15th at 223, Eric Lillibridge tied for 21st with a 226 and Michael Nicoletti fired the Broncos' low round of the day with a 74 to place in a tie for 24th at 227. Matt Klenz rounds out the Bronco scorecard with a 230, good for 33rd place.
"We didn't play really well, but we didn't play that badly either," head coach John Kennaday said after today's round. "This event was a good starting point for the spring season; we looked at this as a sign of what we need to work on, and this tournament accomplished that."
The Master's College's Andrew Lawson earned individual medalist honors as the only golfer to record an under-par score, finishing with a one-under 212. UCLA's Kevin Chappell placed second with an even-par 213.
The Broncos return to action the first weekend in March, with participation in the UC Riverside Invitational, hosted at the PGC Southern California Golf Course in Beaumont.
