New-Look SCU Men’s Golf Team Begins Tournament Play Monday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The 2012-13 collegiate golf season gets underway next week and your Santa Clara University men's team will travel up to the Palouse and play in Washington State University's Itani Quality Home Collegiate Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 10-11.

It's an exciting time for the program, as four highly accomplished prep recruits will make their debut for SCU. Eighth-year Bronco head coach Rob Miller believes it's his best-ever collection of incoming players.

The signing class includes: International champion and German Junior National Team member Martin Keskari, Southern California standout Drew Miller, Bay Area star Carlos Briones - the youngest golfer to ever win the San Francisco City Championship – and Gio Gandionco, a member of the Philippine Junior National Team.

"We are going to bring all seven players, trying to get our freshman some experience right away," said Miller looking ahead to this weekend's trip. "There is a big adjustment to collegiate golf, so this will be good for them, especially since we will have to use three of the freshmen in each tournament moving forward."

The student-athletes arrived on campus this week and the team is currently going through two rounds of qualifying to decide the lineup for Monday morning at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club. In addition to the four newcomers, the Broncos return to of its top players from last season, juniors Scott Lowe (Calgary, Alberta Canada) and Bobby Monaco (Eugene, Ore.). Sophomore Brett Komoto (Honolulu, Hawaii) should also factor into the rotation this season as well.

"Everyone is really excited. Last year was tough because we had such a small team," said Miller. "Now we have a team that is deep and very talented. If someone is struggling they can take a tournament off and work on things, work on problems. We did not have that luxury last year."
