SEASIDE, Calif. - Santa Clara's Scott Lowe tied for second among an 84-man field at the 2012 St. Mary's Invitational held at the Bayonet and Blackhorse Golf Courses just outside Monterey. Lowe posted rounds of 72-70-71 to finish 3-under par, just one shot from his first-ever collegiate win.
"Pretty bittersweet. Solid week of play, but would have liked to get the title being so close," Lowe said about his best collegiate finish to date. "Going into the round, I figured getting to five (under-par) was probably the number I needed. I just didn't take advantage of my opportunities. When I had five holes to play, I was three back, so I knew I needed to make some birdies. After talking with Coach (Miller) I birdied my last par-3 but burned the edge on the first two par-5's coming in. I had some looks on those holes, but they just didn't fall."
Lowe made just four bogeys spanning the 54-hole tournament, which attracts a national field of 15 teams (six ranked in top-100). True freshman and Bay Area prep phenom Carlos Briones fired a 1-over par 73 Tuesday to post a top 20 finish. As a team, Santa Clara outplayed WCC rivals San Francisco and Loyola Marymount, along with four of the six schools competing from out of state.
"Defintely a good way for me to start out the year and a good week overall for this team," added Lowe, a junior from Calgary, Alberta. "I think we can look forward to competing in just about every event going forward, so that is a great feeling - especially having it going as a team so early in the year."
The Broncos will now prepare to host the 3rd-annual Cabo Collegiate at Querencia Golf Club in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico the weekend of Oct. 14-16.
