Santa Clara, Calif. – In their final tournament before the West Coast Conference Championship, the Santa Clara men's golf team travels to Arizona to compete in the University of Wyoming Cowboy Classic presented by Cleveland Golf on April 8-9 on the North Course of the Talking Stick Golf Club in Scottsdale.
The 24-team field will attempt to navigate the par-70, 7,133 yard layout for three rounds over two days. Teams will play 36 holes on Apr. 8 with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. (PDT) and a single 18-hole round also starting at 7:30 a.m. on Apr. 9. Team scoring will consist of counting the four best scores of each five-man team.
WCC members Saint Mary's, No. 22 in the recent Golfstat.com rankings and the highest ranked team in the field, and Gonzaga will also be competing in their final tune-ups before joining the Broncos in Bremerton, Wash., on the Gold Mountain Golf Club course for the WCC Championship April 15-17. Other participating teams ranked in the top-100 include: Tulsa (46), Wichita State (63), Colorado (64), Arizona (68), Colorado State (69) and UC Santa Barbara (99).
The Broncos, ranked No. 138, posted one of their best team scores of the spring season carding a second-round 297 in their last event, the UCI Anteater Invitational on March 25. "We had a very good round," said head coach Rob Miller. "One we hadn't seen this calendar year. It was nice to see that." Santa Clara placed eighth in the event for its fifth top-10 finish of the season.
Freshman Martin Keskari has been the Broncos' top individual scorer in each of the last four events with two top-10 finishes. His 73.48 stroke average is nearly two strokes better than Carlos Briones, who is second on the team with an average of 75.33.
