Men’s Golf To Compete In Wyoming Cowboy Classic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Looking to gain some momentum before the West Coast Conference Championship, the Santa Clara men's golf team will compete in its final regular season event on Monday and Tuesday at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic. The 21-team, 114-player event will be contested on the 7,133-yard, par-70 Talking Stick Golf Club North Course.

The Broncos, ranked 96th in the most recent Golfstat.com poll, are one of five top-100 teams in the tournament field. Oklahoma is the top ranked team at No. 11, followed by BYU at No. 39, Colorado at No. 52, and UC Davis at No. 65. The poll was released on April 2.

Monday will feature 36 holes in a shotgun start format beginning at 7:30 a.m. (PDT) with Tuesday's 18-hole final round also starting at 7:30 a.m. The Broncos will be teamed with two of the top ranked squads on Monday, playing with BYU and Colorado, as well as UTEP, starting on the fifth through eighth holes.

Santa Clara has been very good all season placing in the top-5 twice and finishing in seventh place or better six times in nine events. But, according to head coach Rob Miller, the team has yet to put it all together for one event. This will be their last chance before the WCC Tournament next week.

Freshman Tyler Kertson is one of two Broncos to play all 27 rounds and his 73.52 stroke average and seven below-par rounds are team highs. Senior Scott Lowe has also played every round compiling a 74.04 average with seven rounds at or below par.

Sophomore Gio Gandionco has the second-best stroke average on the team at 73.83 playing 24 rounds this season and has been the team's top individual finisher in two of the last three events. Drew Miller and Evan McLeod complete the Broncos' team while Carlos Briones will compete as an individual.

Following the Cowboy Classic the Broncos will get ready for the conference tournament, which takes place at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash. on April 14-16.
