SEASIDE, Calif. – Led by freshman Hayden Shieh and junior Carlos Briones, the Santa Clara men’s golf team completed the first two rounds of its fall season in sixth place after scoring a 584 (+8) at the Saint Mary’s Invitational, completed today at the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Courses in Seaside, Calif.
The Broncos scored a first round 295, helped by Shieh’s 2-under 70 that included an eagle on the par-5, 517-yard 10th hole. Junior Carlos Briones carded the Broncos’ low round of the day with a second round 3-under 69 as Santa Clara compiled a team score of 289 over the second 18 holes.
Tournament host Saint Mary’s sits atop the leaderboard by five shots over San Diego after amassing a 570 (-6) total. The Broncos are two strokes behind Pacific and Fresno State for fourth place and five shots behind third place San Francisco.
Shieh, playing his first collegiate tournament, scored par on 16 of 18 second round holes on his way to an even-par 72. He enters Tuesday’s final round tied for 8th with four players at 2-under (142), five shots behind leader Mathias Dahl of San Diego.
After a first round 3-over 75, Briones carded six birdies on the second 18 and matched the third-best score of his career with a 69. He’s tied for 14th with a trio of players at even-par (144).
Junior Gio Gandionco shot a second round even-par 72 after a first round 74 and rests in a tie for 19th place at 2-over 146.
Sophomore Tyler Kertson scored identical rounds of 76 and tied for 49th with a 152 total (+8). Kertson did collect the second eagle of the day for the Broncos when he completed the par-5, 508-yard 12th hole in three shots during the second round. The Broncos were one of three teams to collect multi eagles during the day.
Playing as an individual sophomore Michael Hultquist, in just his second career collegiate tournament, scored rounds of 77 to place in a tie for 62nd at 10-over (154). Sophomore Evan McLeod compiled a 157 total after rounds of 76 and 81.
Monday’s second round, played on the Black Horse course, scored much lower than the first round as 15 players had rounds in the 60s and all but four teams had lower scores. Tuesday’s final round will be played on the Bayonet course, which had a low individual round of 70 on Monday.
