FRESNO, Calif. – The Santa Clara men's golf team carded rounds of 285 and 290 and sits in a tie for fourth place after the first day of competition at the 10-team Nick Watney Invitational, played today at the 6,950-yard, par-72 Sunnyside Country Club in Fresno, Calif.

Playing in their second tournament of the fall season, the Broncos are knotted with Cal Poly and Cal State Northridge with a first day total of 575 (-1), four strokes behind third place UC Irvine (571) and seven shots behind tournament host Fresno State (568). Pacific carded the day's lowest score with a second round 270 and leads the pack by 17 shots.

Three Broncos scored below par in today's first round and the team was just four strokes off the lead after the first 18 holes. Gio Gandionco and freshman Hayden Shieh both shot a 2-under 70 and Carlos Briones was a shot behind at 1-under 71.

Briones shot a 2-under 70 in the second round and enters Tuesday's final round tied for 10th at 3-under (141). Gandionco went 1-over (73) in the second round and finished the day tied for 11th with eight other golfers at 1-under (143). Shieh scored a second round 74 (+2) and is tied for 20th at even-par (144).

Pacific's Byron Meth is the second round leader at 9-under (135) after a second round 65 (-7) moved him six spots up the leaderboard.

Playing in just his third collegiate tournament, sophomore Michael Hultquist matched a career-low score with a second round 73 (+1) and is tied for 46th place with a 150 (+6) total. Tyler Kertson scored rounds of 74 and 80 to tie for 55th place with a 154 (+10).

Junior Drew Miller, playing as an individual in his first action of the season, scored rounds of 74 and 79 to tie for 53rd place with a 153 (+9) total.

Tuesday's final round tees off at 8:00 a.m. (PT) from the first and 10th holes with player groupings going in 10-minute intervals. Live stats will be available at www.golfstat.com and complete results and a tournament recap will be posted on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
