Shieh Wins Individual Title At Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational

STOCKTON, Calif. – Freshman Hayden Shieh carded a 4-under-par 67 in today's final round and captured his first collegiate title winning the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational at the Stockton Golf and Country Club by one shot over second-round leader Petter Mikalsen of Denver.

Scoring all three rounds under par, Shieh topped the 64-player field with a tournament total of 8-under 205. Entering the day in second place one shot back, Shieh birdied four holes and scored par on the other 14 for his career-low round of 67. He also became the first Bronco individual medalist since Scott Travers won the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on February 27, 2011.

As a team, the Broncos scored a final round 289 and placed in 10th with an 869 (+17) total missing their fifth top-5 finish of their completed fall season by just 12 shots in a tightly-contested tournament. The third through 10th place teams were separated by only 17 shots.

Washington State took the team title with an 841 (-11) total, finishing six shots better than runner-up Denver (847). Host Pacific placed in third (852) while BYU took fourth (856).

Entering the final round tied with Shieh for second place just one shot off the lead, Gio Gandionco fired a 5-over 76 today and placed in a tie for 17th with a 214 (+1) total.

Sophomore Tyler Kertson had his best round of the tournament today with a 1-over 72 and totaled an 8-over 214 to tie for 42nd. Playing as an individual Michael Hultquist also carded a career-low round with today's 72 to move into a tie for 54th with a 227 (+14) total.

Evan McLeod and Drew Miller had their best rounds of the tournament today with each shooting a 75.

The Broncos ended a successful fall season that included their first team title since March of 2011 with a win at the Utah Ogio Invitational on Oct. 7. They also had three top-5 finishes and their first individual medalist since the 2010-11 season.

Santa Clara will begin its spring season on February 18, 2015 competing in the prestigious John A. Burns Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Hawai'i at the Wailua Golf Course in Lihue, Kaua'i.
