SAN ANTONIO, Tex. – The Santa Clara men's golf team carded its second-lowest score of the spring season with a second round 285 and are alone in 11th place after the first day of action at the 16-team Lone Star Invitational, competed on the 7,247-yard, par-72 Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
With a two-round total of 578 (+2), the Broncos are just nine shots behind fifth-place Louisiana-Lafayette and UT Arlington entering Tuesday's final round. No. 12 ranked Texas Tech holds the two-round lead at 549 (-27) with SE Louisiana second at 558.
Final round play begins Tuesday with a shotgun start at 6:30 a.m. PT.
A pair of Broncos had career-best rounds on Monday. Freshman Hayden Shieh matched his career low score with a first round 5-under 67 and Carlos Briones also had a 67 in the second round. Shieh is tied for 12th at 4-under 140 after a second-round 73. Briones followed a 75 with his career-low effort to tie for 25th at 2-under 142.
Gio Gandionco had rounds of 72 and 73 to tie for 37th at 1-over 145 while Tyler Kertson bounced back from an opening round 79 to shoot even-par 72 on the second 18 holes.
