SAN ANTONIO, Tex. – The Santa Clara men's golf team climbed one spot on the leaderboard with a final round 289 and claimed a 10th place finish at the 16-team Lone Star Invitational, completed today at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
Tuesday's score followed a second-round 285 giving the Broncos consecutive rounds below 290 for the first time this season. Santa Clara finished in the middle of a congested field at 867 (+3). No. 12 ranked Texas Tech claimed the team title with an 835 (-29) total, 11 strokes better than Southeastern Louisiana.
A final round 2-under 70 put Carlos Briones in a 13th-place tie at 212 (-4) for the tournament. Briones, who earned his ninth career top-20 finish, played the last two rounds at 7-under following a career-low 67 in Monday's second round.
Texas Tech's Hannes Ronneblad defeated UTSA's Zander Lozano on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff to capture individual medalist honors.
Following a career-low tying 67 in Monday's first round, Hayden Shieh had consecutive rounds of 73 to finish tied for 18th at 3-under 213. It was the freshman's sixth top-20 finish in his ninth event.
Gio Gandionco placed in a tie for 41st with a 3-over 219 (72-73-74) and Tyler Kertson scored even-par over the final 36 holes with back-to-back rounds of 72 after opening the event with a 79. He climbed 14 spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for 59th with a 223 (+7) total.
The Broncos are right back on the links Thursday competing in The Goodwin. Tournament host Stanford, No. 7 in the latest Golfweek.com rankings, leads a quartet of top-25 teams that also includes No. 11 USC, No. 15 Oregon and No. 24 UNLV. Additionally five WCC squads, including Santa Clara, will be among the field of 24 competing on the Stanford Golf Course.
