Men’s Golf Takes 12th At Prestigious The Goodwin

STANFORD, Calif. – Competing against 18 teams ranked in the top 100 by Golfweek.com, the Santa Clara men's golf team held its own to claim 12th place at The Goodwin, completed Saturday at the Stanford Golf Course. The prestigious event annually attracts top programs from around the country and the 2015 tournament field was stacked with eight teams ranked in the top 40.

The Broncos shot a final round 292 completing the event at 853 (+13), their best 54-hole score of the season, to finish higher than ranked foes No. 39 Colorado, No. 61 Northwestern, No. 64 Denver and No. 82 Colorado State. UAB, ranked 38th and No. 36 SMU tied for the team title at 817 (-23) with tournament host No. 8 Stanford taking third at 823 (-17).

Individually the Broncos were led by sophomore Tyler Kertson who shot a final round 2-under 68 to finish tied for 20th at 1-under 209, matching his career-low tournament score. A final round 77 dropped Hayden Shieh into a tie for 50th at 4-over 214.

Scoring a tournament-high 42 pars, Gio Gandionco finished at 5-over 215 following a final round 72 to tie for 64th place with teammate Carlos Briones and a quartet of golfers. After playing the first 36 holes at even-par, Briones shot a final round 75.

Drew Miller, who competed as an individual, also entered final round play at even-par but his 76 left him at 216 tied for 70th. Michael Hultquist had his tournament sabotaged with a second round 83 and finished with a 236 total.

The Broncos have their final tuneup before the WCC Championship competing in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz. beginning Apr. 6. The conference tournament takes place from Apr. 13-15 at the Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif.
