SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara men's golf team takes part in its final regular season event of the year competing in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic starting Monday on the 7,218-yard, par-72 Cattail Course at the Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz.
With their impressive showing at the prestigious Stanford tournament The Goodwin last week, the Broncos are ranked 98th by Golfweek.com and will compete against four other top 100 teams including No. 46 Colorado, No. 61 UC Davis, No. 80 Idaho and No. 90 McNeese State among the 18 teams entered.
Santa Clara shot its two lowest rounds of the season at The Goodwin to place 12th in the 24-team field besting ranked foes Colorado (39), Northwestern (61), Denver (64) and Colorado State (82). The Broncos scored a first round 281 and a second round 280 on their way to a season-low 853.
Sophomore Tyler Kertson matched his career-low tournament score of 209 to finish tied for 20th at The Goodwin while freshman Hayden Shieh had two sub-par rounds and ended at 4-over 214. Shieh leads the team with a 71.87 average and 13 rounds below par.
Carlos Briones and Gio Gandionco, who both shot 215 at The Goodwin, and Drew Miller, form the Broncos lineup at the Cowboy Classic. Michael Hultquist will compete as an individual.
Santa Clara tied for eighth at last year's event held at the Talking Stick Golf Club with Gandionco and Kertson paving the way at 3-over 213.
Teamed with Long Beach State, Air Force and San Francisco, the Broncos will tee off from the fifth through eighth holes at 7:30 a.m. (PT) Monday morning. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com and a recap will be posted on the Broncos website.
The Broncos look to gain some momentum heading into the West Coast Conference Championship, scheduled for April 13-15 at the Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif.
