Shieh Just Misses Second Straight Tournament Win; SCU Places Third

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. – Hayden Shieh was outstanding once again on Tuesday, following up his second round 65 with a 1-under par 71 in final round play at the Bill Cullum Invitational in Southern California.

Shieh (pictured far right) finished 8-under and the Bronco contingent thought he had won the event before watching Fidel Concepcion of Utah State have his round of 67 post - edging Shieh by a single stroke.

"There was an issue with the live scoring, so (Concepcion's) score hadn't been there all day," said Santa Clara head coach Rob Miller. "So all of the sudden (Concepcion) went from 4-under to 9-under as we watched here in the clubhouse."

It was still another good finish for Shieh, a sophomore from nearby Fremont, Calif., who is becoming one of the top ranked players in the West Coast Conference. Shieh was coming off his second career tournament title, having won the Cabo Collegiate earlier this month. His score of 8-under this week gave him runner-up honors among a field of 92.

As a team, the Broncos were competing for the team title with No. 37 Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount until the final few holes. LMU's final round 283 was its second-best in school history. Junior Tyler Kertson (-4) and true freshman Michiel Eyre III (-1) also placed among the leaders for SCU. Kertson shot an opening round 67 and Erye III a 69.

The event wrapped up Santa Clara's four-event fall season. The team returns to action Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29-30 at the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson.
