TUCSON, Ariz. – Sparked by a career-best round of 4-under 68 from freshman Charlie Watson in Monday's second round, the Santa Clara men's golf team holds a five-shot lead after two days of the Arizona National Invitational Tournament, competed on the 7,262-yard, par-72, Omni Tucson National Catalina Golf Course. The third and final round will tee off Tuesday morning.

As a team the Broncos scored a 287 in Monday's second round for a two-day total of 11-under 565, five strokes better than second place Nevada.

"It's better to be in front than behind," said head coach Rob Miller after his Broncos posted consecutive rounds below par for the third time in a tournament during the 2015-16 season.

Following up his course record 10-under 62 from yesterday, Hayden Shieh finished at even-par 72 today. He enters final round action one-stroke behind Iowa State's Nick Voke at the top of the individual leaderboard.

Miller remained in awe of Shieh's course record round from Sunday. "Just phenomenal," the coach said. "It was one of those days where everything went well. He made a lot of putts and took advantage of his opportunities. He was in a zone."

Shieh bested the course record of 63, which was established by PGA Tour veteran Kirk Triplett.

Watson became the sixth Santa Clara golfer to score a round in the 60s this season with his effort. He bettered his career-low round by three strokes and is tied for eighth place with a pair of golfers at 4-under 140. "Charlie played great in his first event as a member of the team," Miller said.

Freshman Michiel Eyre III also finished second round play below par following his 1-under 71 on Monday. Eyre is tied for 19th with a two-day total of 1-under 143.

"We're excited about tomorrow and looking forward to finishing strong," Miller added. "The pin placements will be difficult and we have to be less aggressive at times. I want the guys to play smart golf."
