SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – A final round 286 lifted the Santa Clara men's golf team to a seventh place finish at the 12-team Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, completed Sunday on the 7,107-yard, par-72 Outlaw Course at Desert Mountain.
Finishing up their fifth round of golf in the past eight days, the Broncos scored their lowest round of the tournament with a 2-under on Sunday to climb three spots on the leaderboard, ending the two-day event with an 880 (+16) total.
Texas A&M overcame Michigan to win the team total with an 847 (-17), four shots better than the Wolverines.
Sophomore Hayden Shieh carded a 6-under 66 Sunday to help the Broncos improve their team standing. Shieh moved into a tie for 10th individually at 2-under 214 by carding the second-lowest score of the three-round event.
Frehman Michiel Eyre III fired a final round 1-under 71 to tie for 39th with a 7-over 223. Tyler Kertson was 1-over for the final two rounds and placed in a tie for 32nd at 221 (+5) following Sunday's 1-over 73.
Evan McLeod ended with a 227 (+11) total after Sunday's 76 and tied for 51st. Charlie Watson finished in a tie for 56th with a two-day total of 231 (+15). Texas A&M's Ben Crancer claimed individual medalist honors with an 8-under 208, one shot better than Purdue's Brian Carlson.
The Broncos finished the difficult stretch of golf in impressive style with their ninth sub-par team score in 21 rounds this season. They also won the Arizona NIT, which was completed Tuesday in Tucson.
Santa Clara now gets a little breather before competing in the Stanford Goodwin from March 24-26 at the Stanford Golf Course.
