STANFORD, Calif. – Tyler Kertson carded a 1-under 69 in Thursday's first round at The Goodwin, but the rest of the Broncos had a more difficult time on the 6,727-yard, par-70 Stanford Golf Course, finishing the first day of the three-day tournament tied for 21st place with a 296 (+16) total.
Some of the top programs in the country are competing in the prestigious event, including No. 1 USC and No. 8 Stanford, but it was UC Davis taking the first-round lead with a 3-under 277.
Only 19 strokes separate the first-place Aggies from Santa Clara and San Francisco, a margin that can easily be made up over the next two rounds.
For the Broncos to climb the team leaderboard they will need better scoring from their No. 1 player. Sophomore Hayden Shieh matched his season-high score with a first-round 78. Shieh responded with a 66 the round after scoring 78 in the Broncos' last event.
Kertson is tied for 11th with seven other golfers, four shots behind Luke Vivolo of UC Davis. Derek Ackerman carded a 3-over 73 to tie for 52nd place.
Evan McLeod and Michiel Eyre III each shot a first-round 7-over 77 and are tied for 104th in the 128-player field.
Friday's second round gets underway at 7:30 a.m. PDT. Santa Clara will be grouped with Northwestern and Fresno State, teeing off at 12:25 p.m. from the 10th hole.
