DANVILLE, Calif. – Sophomore Hayden Shieh did his best but he couldn't stop the Santa Clara men's golf team from sliding into eighth place after a second-round 310 at the WCC Championship tournament, completed Tuesday at the 6,783-yard, par-72 Blackhawk Country Club Lakeside Course.

The Broncos entered play on Tuesday in second place after scoring a first-round 286 team score, but couldn't keep the momentum, falling six spots on the leaderboard.

"We've had some uncharacteristically horrible rounds over the last three events," said head coach Rob Miller. "We need to regroup and finish strong. We have one more round to play."

With Tuesday's 2-over 74, Shieh remains in the top-5, tied for fourth-place at 3-under-par 141 heading into the final round. Jonathan De Los Reyes of Saint Mary's is the runaway leader with a six-shot bulge after two rounds.

"Where we're at right now is pretty much who we are," Miller explained. "Tyler (Kertson) struggled and our two freshmen had a tough time handling the adversity of a pressure event."

First-year player Charlie Watson shot an 85 and Kertson scored 82 on Tuesday, forcing the Broncos to use a high score that added to their elevated team total.

Freshman Michiel Eyre III carded a second round 4-over 76 to sit in a tie for 12th place at 2-over 146.

"It's tough at this point," Miller said. "The guys will do the best they can to go out on a high note. We have some stuff to build on and I want to see them do well in the final round."
