Season Ends For Shieh, Men’s Golf At NCAA Regional

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Hayden Shieh carded a final round 4-over 76 to finish play at the Albuquerque regional of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships tied for 28th place with a three-day total of 228.

Playing as an individual in the event, Shieh needed to finish with the lowest score among players not on one of the top five teams.

"It was tough out there, the winds were challenging," Broncos head coach Rob Miller said. "But everybody had to play under the same conditions."

Tuesday's second-round 81 dropped Shieh down the leaderboard, putting him in a tough spot for Wednesday's final 18 holes.

"Hayden played OK, not great," Miller added. "He didn't play that badly yesterday. Two holes cost him a good round. You hit a bad shot and you have to get lucky to recover. The things out of your control are frustrating."

"The second round killed me," Shieh said. "There were tough pin placements and the wind was blowing. A couple missed shots led to bogeys and they started adding up."

A final round 76 left Shieh seven shots behind Texas A&M's Cameron Champ, who was the low individual player after defeating Army's Peter Kim in a playoff.

"I just went at the pins today," Shieh said of his final round strategy. "I knew I had to be a couple of shots under and I went for it. It just didn't work out."

"He's disappointed," Miller said of his sophomore. "Everything has to go right (to advance to the finals) and it just didn't happen. Give him credit, he kept fighting the whole way."
