SAN FRANCISCO – Junior Hayden Shieh earned his seventh career top-5 finish with a tournament total 1-over 214 and Santa Clara men's golf opened its fall season with a 10th place standing at the USF Olympic Intercollegiate, completed today at the Olympic Club Lake Course.

A final round 301 moved the Broncos down the team leaderboard and they ended with an 889 (+37) total. WCC foe BYU took the team title by eight shots over St. Mary's.

Shieh carded a 2-over 73 in Tuesday's final round and ended the tournament in a fifth-place tie with a pair of golfers. He was the Broncos low scorer in all three rounds, matched by Michiel Eyre III with a 71 in Tuesday's second round.

"We were a little undermanned," head coach Rob Miller said. "Hayden did Hayden's thing, but we need to get him more support."

Eyre was very supportive over the initial 36 holes, but his final round 6-over 77 dropped him back on the leaderbaord. He entered Tuesday tied for 14th place but slipped into a tie for 29th with an 8-over 221 by tournament's end.

"We don't have a true No. 2 player on our roster right now," Miller added. "We need someone to grow into that role. The talent and experience is there to grow."

Sophomore Charlie Watson had his lowest round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 4-over 75, ending the event with a 232 total. Freshman Devrath Das shot a final round 76, finishing his first collegiate tournament at 13-over 226 to tie for 42nd place.

"We need to play better than that," Miller said. "We have a lot of room to grow and we will get better."

Their next opportunity comes in two weeks at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational. That two-day event starts on Sept. 26 at the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo.
