ERIE, Colo. – Sophomore Charlie Watson matched a career-low with a first-round 4-under 68, freshman Matt McCarty, playing in his first collegiate tournament carded identical rounds of 1-over 73, and junior Hayden Shieh was the team's low-scorer with a two-round total of 1-over 145 leading Santa Clara men's golf after the first day of competition at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational.
Behind those three the Broncos shot a season-low 291 over the opening 18 holes. However a second-round 301 left them at the bottom of the team leaderboard with a 592 (+16) total after 36 holes. Host Colorado will enter Tuesday's final round with a five-shot lead over Utah after scoring a 558 (-18).
Shieh scored rounds of 72 and 73 to finish tied for 47th with his total. Watson followed his 68 with a 78 and is tied with McCarty at 2-over 146.
Michiel Eyre III carded a 155 with rounds of 78 and 77 and Devrath Das ended the first 36 holes at 163.
Colorado's Morten Toft Hansen holds a one-shot lead over a pair of golfers heading into the final round, which gets underway at 7:15 a.m. PT on Tuesday.
