NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Junior Hayden Shieh shot a final-round 4-under 66 and Santa Clara men's golf matched Monday's season-low round of 284 to claim a seventh-place finish at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic, completed Tuesday at the 6,713-yard, par-70 Warren Golf Course.

The Broncos shot a 19-over 859 for the three-day event, missing out on a top five finish by five strokes. Texas-El Paso totaled an 835 to hold on for a 1-shot win over host Notre Dame.

"Overall it was kind of a so-so day," head coach Rob Miller said. "But it's better to be in the middle of the pack than the bottom of the pack. I'm encouraged by our play, but we have plenty of room to grow."

Shieh hit 17 of 18 greens and blistered the course on Tuesday, matching the tournament's second-lowest round. He was able to climb 22 spots on the individual leaderboard to finish in a tie for ninth with a 1-over 211 total to claim his 11th career top-10 finish.

"The score wasn't as good as he was," Miller said of Shieh. "He didn't make enough putts or he could've had a course record."

Shieh feels his game is rebounding after an uncharacteristic poor showing in Colorado. "I lost it a bit after the Olympic Club," he said. "I'm trying to get back to being more consistent. I listened to coach and went after every pin and just had confidence in my swing."

Freshman Matt McCarty held on for his first top-20 finish. He shot a final-round 2-over 72 to place in a tie for 20th at 3-over 213. "That was a good showing by Matt," Miller added. "That's a good sign for us moving forward."

Freshman Michiel Eyre III tied for 47th at 9-over 219 following a final round 74. Charlie Watson totaled a 223 to tie for 61st at 223.

Devrath Das had his best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 2-over 72 to finish with a 224 total. "It was nice to get Dev involved," Miller said. "We needed him to contribute today and he did."

Playing as an individual, Derek Ackerman finished in a tie for 72nd at 225 after his final-round 75.

"It's a step in the right direction," Miller said about his team's performance. "We need to take advantage of our experience and continue to get better. We want to be playing our best golf at the end of the year."

The Broncos conclude their fall season at the Saint Mary's Invitational, which is schedule to get underway on Oct. 24 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.
