PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Santa Clara men's golf recorded its lowest team score with a final round 293 and ended its fall season with an 888 total for a sixth place finish at the Saint Mary's Invitational, completed today at the 6,927-yard, par-71 Poppy Hills Golf Club.

The Broncos moved up a spot on the leaderboard and flirted with a higher finish before faltering over the final three holes. Santa Clara finished seven shots behind third-place San Fancisco. San Diego State, the highest ranked of the 14 competing teams, was the runaway winner with an 853 total, 12 strokes better than runner-up Saint Mary's.

"It could've been better," head coach Rob Miller said. "We stumbled down the stretch. Overall, I can't complain. We got real close to having a chance for third place, but that's not surprising with such a young team. It's a step in the right direction and it was a good experience for the guys to be in line for a top finish."

Three Santa Clara players shot a final round 1-over 72 to aid in the team score. Sophomore Derek Ackerman moved up 14 spots on the individual leaderboard to claim the best finish by a Bronco, reaching a tie for 18th with a total of 9-over 222.

Michiel Eyre III moved up seven spots into a tie for 41st with a total of 12-over 225. Charlie Watson climbed 15 spots with his final round 72 to finish in a tie for 46th at 227.

Junior Hayden Shieh carded a final round 77 to finish in a tie for 24th at 10-over 223. "It was surprising that Hayden had such a tough finish," Miller said. "He's played this course a lot and that was unusual for him. He was really disappointed."

Freshman Matt McCarty also shot a final round 77 to finish tied with Watson at 227.

Competing as individuals, senior Evan McLeod carded a 230 total and freshman Devrath Das was at 235.

The Broncos will take a few months off before beginning the spring season in the middle of February at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Hawai'i.

"I'm happy the way the fall ended," Miller concluded. "We got better after a tough second tournament."
