Men’s Golf Tied For Seventh After Two Rounds Of Arizona NIT

TUCSON, Ariz. – Santa Clara men's golf shot an even-par 576 over the first two rounds, but defending their title at the National Invitational Tournament will be a chore. The Broncos ended the first day of competition tied for seventh-place, 27 shots behind leader Iowa State. Final round action on the 7,262-yard, par-72, Omni Tucson National Resort Catalina Golf Course will tee off Tuesday morning.

The Broncos were consistent all day, scoring a 1-under 287 in the second round following a 1-over 289 on the first 18 holes of the day. The even-par score leaves them tied with San Francisco. A top five finish isn't out of reach as the Broncos trail fourth place UTEP by seven shots and fifth place Arizona by six shots.

Junior Hayden Shieh ended the day tied for 11th at 5-under 139 following rounds of 69 and 70 to lead the team. He'll enter the final round only five shots behind tri-leaders Nick Voke of Iowa State and UNLV's Shintaro Ban and Harry Hall, who all carded a 10-under 134.

Freshman Matt McCarty finished the day at even-par 144 with rounds of 71 and 73. He's tied for 28th in the 88-player field.

Sophomores Derek Ackerman and Charlie Watson each shot an even-par 72 in the second round. Ackerman had a two-shot improvement over his first round score and sits in a 36th place tie at 2-over 146. Watson bettered his first round score by five shots and is tied for 54th at 5-over 149.

Michiel Eyre III scored a 9-over 153 with rounds of 75 and 78 and is tied for 72nd place.
