Men’s Golf 13th At Lamkin San Diego Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In an event that featured 12 teams ranked in the top-100 of the Golfstat.com poll, Santa Clara men's golf scored a final round 300 to finish play at the Lamkin San Diego Classic in 13th place with a three-round total of 888.

"It wasn't our best effort," head coach Rob Miller said. "We have a young group and that's what you get, inconsistent play."

Coming off a second round where they scored a 291, the Broncos failed to build off that momentum and had just one player score below par in the final round. Freshman Matt McCarty fired a 2-under 70 on Tuesday to move into a tie for 24th with a 1-over 217 total.

"It was nice for Matt to get a top-25 finish in a field of this caliber," Miller added.

Junior Hayden Shieh carded a final round 1-over 73 and finished in a tie for 28th with a 2-over 218 total.

"We had Hayden and Matt and nobody else," Miller explained. "We can't get anything out of 3, 4 and 5 spots right now."

Sophomore Derek Ackerman was at 5-over 77 on Tuesday, ending the tournament in a tie for 58th place with a 9-over 225 total. Charlie Watson's final round 80 left him tied for 69th with at 12-over 228. Hassan Said also scored a final round 80 and ended with a 233 total.

Competing as an individual, freshman Devrath Das shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday for an 11-over 227 total. He tied for 66th place.

"We have one round a tournament where we have good scores," Miller continued. "We just can't seem to do that consistently."

The Broncos return to competition on April 3 when they travel to the Pacific Northwest for the Seattle Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay.
