UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – Junior Hayden Shieh carded the best score of the day with a final round 3-under 67 to claim second place at the Seattle Redhawk Invitational, completed Tuesday at the Chambers Bay Golf Course.

Shieh ended the tournament at 6-under 206 and watched from the clubhouse as Northwestern's Dylan Wu, who is tied for 14th in the nation in stroke average, birdied his final hole to win individual medalist honors by a single shot. Shieh earned his eighth top-five finish and second runner-up placement of his career.

"It was a tough way for Hayden to lose, but he had a great tournament and is playing really well this spring," head coach Rob Miller said.

The Broncos followed their opening round 304 by scoring 293 in each of the next two rounds to finish in 14th place with an 890 total. Iowa State scored a 5-over 853 to win the team title by one stroke over Northwestern.

"That first round was a bit of a bummer," Miller noted. "Had we saved some of those shots we would have been right where we thought we should be in this event."

The Broncos got a strong final round from Derek Ackerman, who shot a 2-over 72. He moved into a tie for 49th place at 12-over 224. "Derek played better and that's a good sign for us," Miller said. "He's playing with a lot of confidence right now."

Freshman Matt McCarty fired a final round 78 to finish in a tie for 71st at 18-over 230. Charlie Watson and Hassan Said each scored a final round 77. Watson ended in a tie for 74th at 19-over 231 while Said tied for 83rd at 24-over 236.

"The guys haven't competed in a few weeks and it showed with some inconsistent play," Miller added. "It's good to get back in action and ready for conference."

The Broncos final spring event before the WCC Championship takes place next week at the Ping Cougar Classic. The tournament will be competed at the Riverside Country Club in Provo, Utah, the same course that will host the conference final on April 20-22.

"We're taking eight players next week to get a feel for the course," Miller explained about next week's event. The Cougar Classic will span two days beginning on Apr. 10.
