PROVO, Utah – Led by freshman Matt McCarty and junior Hayden Shieh, who both tied for third on the individual leaderboard, Santa Clara men's golf carded a season-best 6-under 282 in Tuesday's final round to finish in a fourth-place tie at the PING Cougar Classic with a tournament total of 9-under 855.

Shieh scored a final round 3-under 69 and McCarty a 1-under 71, finishing with four other players at 6-under 210, one shot behind co-champions Pavan Sagoo of Saint Mary's and LMU's Blake Meek.

McCarty bogeyed his final hole and Shieh was 1-over on his next-to-last hole, preventing them from earning a share of the lead. Still, it was the first top-five finish for McCarty and the third top-five in five spring events for Shieh.

"We had a pretty good day," head coach Rob Miller said. "It was tough to see Matt and Hayden go 1-over near the end, but we were competitive today."

Sophomore Derek Ackerman carded a season-low 2-under 70 in the final round, helping the Broncos to their lowest team score since they won the National Invitational Tournament with a final round 281 in March of 2016. Ackerman jumped 11 spots on the leaderboad to finish tied for 39th at 5-over 221.

The Broncos tied conference foe Saint Mary's and finished five shots behind LMU. BYU won the event at 22-under 842. They're all back on the same course next week for the WCC Championship.

"BYU lit it up, but we have the feeling that anything can happen next week," Miller explained. "We tied a good Saint Mary's team and we competed with LMU. We were close enough to give us a chance at the end."

Sophomore Charlie Watson shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday, giving the Broncos four counting scores at or below par for the first time this year. Watson was 3-under over the last two rounds and finished tied for 33rd at 3-over 219. Playing in his first tournament since the fall, senior Evan McLeod ended in a tie for 41st at 6-over 222.

Three Broncos competed as individuals with sophomore Hassan Said the highest finisher among them. Said used a career-best 69 in the first round to finish tied for 23rd at 1-over 217, the best finish and tournament score in his brief career.

Sophomore Michiel Eyre III tied for 56th at 11-over 227 while freshman Devrath Das ended in 62nd place at 18-over 234.

The Broncos are back in Provo at the Riverside Country Club for the WCC Championship tournament, which gets underway on Apr. 20.
