WCC TOURNAMENT CENTRAL | VIDEO: Miller, Shieh Preview 2017 WCC Championship
PROVO, Utah – Junior Hayden Shieh carded a 2-under 70 on Friday and will enter final round play tied for first at the WCC Championship, taking place on the Riverside Country Club course in Provo. As a team the Broncos are fourth with a two-round 2-over 578 total.
Shieh entered Friday's action with a one-shot lead but was caught by BYU's Peter Kuest, who matched Shieh's tournament-best first round score with a 5-under 67. They are 2 shots ahead of BYU's Patrick Fishburn, the 40th-ranked player in the country.
The Broncos dropped to fourth place with their second-round 292 team score and trail third-place Saint Mary's by seven shots. BYU leads the pack at 559 with No. 22 Pepperdine five shots back at 564.
"It wasn't our best day," head coach Rob Miller said. "Hayden played well again, but everyone else was a little disappointed."
Sophomore Derek Ackerman scored an even-par 72 to move into a tie for 20th at 1-over 145. He's one shot better than teammate Matt McCarty, who shot a 2-over 74 and is tied for 22nd at 146.
With a second round 4-over 76, sophomore Hassan Said sits in a tie for 38th at 6-over 150. Charlie Watson has a two-round total of 158.
"Nobody got their putter out today," Miller said of his team's green play. "They weren't very hot. We need to putt better to stay close."
The course will play longer for Saturday's final round, which could benefit Santa Clara's big hitters. Players will tee off starting at 8:20 a.m. "We need to play better," Miller proclaimed. "The guys will do their best on Saturday."
