NCAA Championships - Stanford Regional Central

STANFORD, Calif. – Junior Hayden Shieh got off to a rough start in the first round of the Stanford Regional of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships, bogeying three of his final four holes en route to a 6-over 76 on Monday. Round two of the three-day event gets underway Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. on the 6,727-yard, par-70 Stanford Golf Course.

Making his third consecutive appearance at a regional, Shieh is ranked second among the 10 individual competitors. Thirteen teams are also competing at the event with the five lowest scoring squads and the lowest individual scorer not on one of those teams advancing to the Championship final in Sugar Grove, Ill. on May 26-31.

Shieh finished the season with a 70.57 stroke average and scored below par in 15 of his 18 rounds during the fall. However, Stanford is not his favorite course and the results were evident in being tied for 61st after 18 holes.

"He's never played well on this course," head coach Rob Miller said. "The course just doesn't sit well with him. He's played it a number of times and hasn't performed well."

Shieh put together one of the most impressive seasons in Santa Clara history and isn't about to let Monday's first round get him discouraged.

"He dug himself a big hole," Miller said. "But I expect him to pick up the pieces, come back tomorrow and go about his business. That's just the kind of player he is. He's not one of the top 100 golfers in the country for nothing, so I wouldn't be surprised if he scored under par."

The lowest scoring individual after the first round is UC Irvine's David Kim, who shot a 3-under 67. Shieh has at least nine strokes to make up over the next two days and will begin his assault on the leaders Tuesday at 10:20 a.m. teeing off from the 10th hole.
