NCAA Championships - Stanford Regional Central
STANFORD, Calif. – Rebounding from an uncharacteristic first round, Santa Clara junior Hayden Shieh shot a 2-under 68 in Tuesday's second round of the Stanford regional of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships to climb 20 spots on the individual leaderboard.
Shieh had an eight-stroke improvement over Monday's score and sits tied for 41st at 4-over 144 heading into Wednesday's final round.
"I knew he was going to be good today," head coach Rob Miller said of his standout golfer. "Tee to green that's the best golf I've ever seen. However, he missed too many putts on the front nine and had a bad break on his 11th hole. He hit everything where he was trying to hit it. Unfortunately you have to putt in this game and the reads weren't easy. He left several shots on the green."
Shieh eagled his 10th hole of the day, the 521-yard, par-5 first, to move to 3-under and hit his tee shot on the 483-yard, par-4 second hole on the screws. But the ball tipped the top of a tree and fell into the rough. "He eagled the previous hole and that shot took the wind out of his sails," Miller added.
Making his third consecutive appearance at a regional, Shieh is ranked second among the 10 individual competitors. Thirteen teams are also competing at the event with the five lowest scoring squads and the lowest individual scorer not on one of those teams advancing to the Championship final in Sugar Grove, Ill. on May 26-31.
Baylor, Stanford, Pepperdine and Oklahoma sit one through four on the team leaderboard with BYU, Georgia Tech and North Florida tied for the fifth spot. Oklahoma's Brad Dalke is the overall leader at 11-under with Cal's Collin Morikawa the low individual performer at 4-under.
"He's playing for pride," head coach Rob Miller said of Shieh. "He's trying. He's not giving in to the course. It was probably the best round he shot here. There may have been lower scores, but nobody hit the ball better tee to green. If he hits the ball that well tomorrow and makes a few putts, he could set a course record."
In case you were wondering, the record low at the 6,727-yard, par-70 Stanford Golf Course is 59, established by Stanford's Viraat Badhwar on October 12, 2014.
Final round action begins at 8:20 a.m. with teams and individuals starting from the first and 10th tee box. Shieh will begin his round at 10:12 a.m. from the 10th hole.
