STANFORD, Calif. – Junior Hayden Shieh ended his season by shooting a 2-over 72 in the final round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships Stanford regional at the 6,727-yard, par-70 Stanford Golf Course on Wednesday. His three-round total of 6-over 216 left him in a tie for 38th, eight shots behind individual qualifier Travis Trace of North Florida.
"I'm proud of him for hanging in there on a course he doesn't enjoy playing," head coach Rob Miller said. "Going in I thought he had as good a chance as anyone to win the thing. But after that first day he fell short of his goal."
Shieh was one of 10 individual qualifiers at the regional and made his third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship event. The five lowest scoring teams of the 13 competing, along with the lowest individual scorer not on one of the top-five teams advanced to the Championship final in Sugar Grove, Ill. on May 26-31.
Stanford and Baylor tied for the team title with Pepperdine, Oklahoma and North Carolina rounding out the top five. Oklahoma's Brad Dalke claimed individual medalist honors with a 12-under 198 while Trace finished as the low advancing individual at 2-under 208.
"It's not a positive feeling when you don't play a course well," Miller added. "This course negates Hayden's distance. He's a long ball hitter and this is more of a putting course."
"I hate it," Shieh said of the Stanford Golf Course.
Despite his impression of the course Shieh did improve 23 spots after his opening-round 76 that left him in a tie for 61st. He improved to a tie for 41st after Tuesday's second-round 2-under 68.
"He hit the ball well again today," Miller said of Shieh. "He just didn't make any putts of distance."
Shieh completed one of the best seasons in program history and will be back next season for another run at the NCAA Championship. "He'll take a break and get ready for next year," Miller said. "Hopefully he'll have more company at the regional."
