Men’s Golf Opens Season Sunday At The Jackrabbit

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – It's a later start than normal to the season for Santa Clara men's golf, but the wait is over. The fall season begins Sunday when the squad takes part in The Jackrabbit in Valentine, Neb. Fourteen teams will navigate the 7,785-yard, par-72 Prairie Club Dunes Course over three days.

"We usually play one or two events in September, but this year I scheduled a later start because of the incoming freshman class," head coach Rob Miller said.

All three of the first-year players will participate in the first of four fall events with Zack Kaneshiro and Jack Avrit playing as part of the five-man team while Berk Harvey will compete as an individual.

Anchoring the team for his senior season is Hayden Shieh, who qualified for the NCAA Regionals for a third consecutive season last year. Shieh has played in every event and owns an impressive career stroke average of 70.88. He topped the team last season with a 70.70 average with 25 of his 33 rounds at or below par.

Junior Derek Ackerman and sophomore Matt McCarty will also represent the team.

"The field includes some very good teams from last year," Miller noted. "The course has been ranked in the top 200 by Golf Digest so it should be a good test for the team."

The late start to the season will have the Broncos cramming their four events into a six-week span. The remaining three tournaments are closer to home with all taking place in Northern California.

The Broncos are among the last to tee off on Sunday, starting from the first hole at 8:40 a.m. PT with Nebraska and a group of individuals. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.
