VALENTINE, Neb. – Senior Hayden Shieh holds a 2-shot lead after carding a 5-under 67 and Santa Clara men's golf has a 7-shot advantage with a team total of 540 after two rounds at The Jackrabbit. Final round action gets underway Tuesday morning on the 7,785-yard, par-72 Prairie Club Dunes Course.
One day after shooting a program record 265, the Broncos maintained their lead with a second-round 13-under 275. Tennessee scored the lowest round of the day with a 17-under 271 to move within seven shots of Santa Clara.
"They played well," head coach Rob Miller said of his team. "We struggled a bit with our putting, but overall they hit the ball really good. It was a solid round."
Shieh moved to 13-under 131 after Monday's second-round, two strokes better than UCF's Bobby Bai, who charged up the leaderboard with a 9-under 63.
"Hayden could've had a lower score but he missed some putts on the back," Miller noted. "But he made birdie on his last hole to end happy."
Matt McCarty scored a 3-under 69 and is tied for third-place with a pair of golfers at 10-under 134.
Freshman Jack Avrit slid into a tie for eighth-place at 7-under 137 following his second round 2-under 70.
"It's nice to see us with a few guys at the top of the leaderboard," Miller said. "That's the way you win tournaments. Three solid scores will do that."
Derek Ackerman and Zack Kaneshiro flipped their scores from the first round and find themselves tied for 37th at 2-under 142. Competing as an individual, Berk Harvey carded a second-round 4-over 76 and is tied for 56th at 1-over 145.
The Broncos aim for their first team title since capturing the Arizona NIT on Mar. 1, 2016. They'll have to hold off a competitive field to get there. Final round action is scheduled to get underway at 6:30 a.m. PT. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
