SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The late start to the fall season did wonders for Santa Clara men's golf as they look to ride the momentum of an opening team and individual title into the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, hosted by Cal at the 6,734-yard, par-71 Meadow Club in Fairfax starting Monday.
The Broncos had one of the best outings in program history last week at The Jackrabbit, carding a first-round 23-under 265 on their way to capturing the team title by three-strokes over Tennessee with a 39-under 825.
"Everybody contributed and was productive and it's nice to start the season with a win," head coach Rob Miller said after the victory.
It was Santa Clara's first team win since capturing the Arizona NIT during the 2015-16 season. The team was bolstered by the play of individual medalist Hayden Shieh, who won his third career title with a personal-best 54-hole score of 15-under 201.
Sophomore Matt McCarty tied for sixth at The Jackrabbit, earning the second top-10 of his career with a career-low tournament total of 10-under 206.
The 15-team field includes some squads that are traditionally ranked, including host Cal, Washington, San Diego State, Minnesota and Oregon State. The Broncos will also get a look at some of their West Coast Conference competition with Pepperdine, Saint Mary's, San Diego and San Francisco included in the field.
Teams and individuals will play 36 holes on Monday, beginning with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. A single 18-hole round on Tuesday will complete the event. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
