FAIRFAX, Calif. – Santa Clara men's golf continued its hot start to the season with identical rounds of 274 to complete the first day of competition at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in third-place at 20-under 548, nine-shots behind leader and tournament host California.
"I can't complain about being in third-place in a field like this," head coach Rob Miller said. "This is Cal's home course so I'm not surprised to be nine-strokes behind them. They will be tough to beat."
The Golden Bears scored the two best rounds of the day for a 29-under 539 total. San Diego State is second at 546.
Three Broncos finished the day among the top-10 with senior Hayden Shieh tied for third-place at 10-under 132. He had been battling for the lead most of the day until a three-putt on the final hole dropped him three-shots off the pace set by Cal's K.K. Limbhasut. San Jose State's Kevin Velo is second at 12-under 130.
Matt McCarty and Derek Ackerman both had a solid day, entering the clubhouse tied for ninth-place at 6-under 136. Ackerman's second-round 3-under was bolstered by a pair of eagles, giving him the most among the field.
"Neither of our freshmen played particularly well," Miller noted. "They didn't play badly, just not as good as we expect."
Competing as an individual, freshman Berk Harvey scored a second-round 1-under 70 to finish the day tied with Avrit and six other players at 146.
"There are some good teams behind us," Miller said. "We're trying to validate our initial success and we're in a position for another solid finish in a highly-competitive field."
Final round action on the 6,734-yard, par-71 Meadow Club in Fairfax is set to get underway at 7:40 p.m. PT from the first and 10th tees. Live scoring is available on Golfstat.com.
