SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The 25th-ranked Santa Clara men's golf team jumps right into the fire when it opens the spring portion of its schedule at the Arizona Intercollegiate, which begins play Monday on the 7,283-yard, par-72 Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson.
The field is one of the strongest the Broncos have competed in with seven of the 18 teams ranked in the top-42 in the country and 14 teams ranked in the top-100 of the Golfstat.com team poll. Texas A&M (4), Baylor (5) and Cal (15) are ranked among the top-15 and ahead of the Broncos in the tournament field.
The Broncos used the same five golfers to win two of their four fall events and secure a runner-up finish in another, and the lineup remains the same for the spring opener. "Not much has changed from the fall, as far as I can tell," head coach Rob Miller said.
Senior Hayden Shieh, ranked No. 7 on Golfstat's individual list with an adjusted scoring average of 69.17, anchors the squad. He'll be joined by junior Derek Ackerman, sophomore Matt McCarty, and freshmen Jack Avrit and Zack Kaneshiro to round out the lineup.
Three other golfers – Will DelBiaggio, Michiel Eyre III and Ryan Johnson – will compete in an individual event also hosted by the University of Arizona in conjunction with the intercollegiate.
"A number of others on the team have played well in practice and qualifying, so we're taking them with us to compete," Miller added. "It's a nice feature of this trip that we get a lot of the guys into competition early in the year to shake off the rust."
The field will play 36 holes on Monday beginning with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. PT. Live scoring will be available on golfstat.com.
