TUCSON, Ariz. – Santa Clara men's golf posted its best round of the Arizona Intercollegiate on Tuesday, scoring a final round 2-under 282 to move up four spots into a tie for 10th place with an 898 total.

As a team the Broncos shaved 18-strokes off their second-round score and moved into position for a top-5 finish before faltering at the end.

"We had it going there for a while, but we ended up giving eight shots back," head coach Rob Miller said. "We played decent at least and got into the top-10. We wanted to get to the top half of the field, but we fell apart at the end. Still, not bad after yesterday."

Despite their late surge, the Broncos finished 36 strokes behind tournament host and team champion Arizona, who tallied an 862 total. "You could tell from the scores that the conditions were much better," Miller added.

Matt McCarty and Derek Ackerman each carded a final-round 3-under 68 to lift the team. McCarty earned his fourth top-20 finish, placing in a tie for 19th at 8-over 221. Ackerman matched his career-low round and climbed 22 spots on the individual leaderboard to finish tied for 28th at 10-over 223.

"Derek and Matt played very well today," Miller observed. "They were feeding off each other on the course and it was nice to see."

Senior Hayden Shieh rebounded from a second-round 80 to score even-par 71 over the final 18 holes. He placed in a tie for 45th with a 227 total. "It's the first time I've seen Hayden putt poorly," Miller said of his senior. "It's unusual for him to finish were he did."

Jack Avrit ended the tournament tied for 72nd at 234 with fellow freshman Zack Kaneshiro a shot back at 235. "We need four guys to play well," Miller said. "When two don't play up to par in a tough field, this is what you get."

Baylor's Braden Bailey was the only golfer to finish the event under par, taking individual medalist honors by four shots with a 3-under 210.

Competing in the Arizona Medalist, and event held in conjunction with the Intercollegiate, Michiel Eyre III shot a final-round 1-over 73 to tie for 14th at 224. Will DelBiaggio was a shot back at 225 and Ryan Johnson carded a 236 total. "The guys in the individual tournament played well," Miller noted.

The Broncos are back in action Feb. 12 competing in the two-day San Diego Intercollegiate at The Farms Golf Club in Santa Fe, Calif.
