BANDON, Ore. – Led by sophomore Matt McCarty, who shot a 2-under 69, Santa Clara men's golf scored a team total of 286 to tie with Oregon for seventh-place after the first-round of the Bandon Dunes Championship.

The middle of the pack in the 14-team tournament is tightly congested with the Broncos only eight-strokes behind second-place Clemson. Arizona State claimed the first-round lead with an 11-under 273. Round two of the three-round event, competed on the 6,633-yard, par-71 Pacific Dunes Course is scheduled to get underway Monday morning.

"It was another poor finish," head coach Rob Miller said. "We were 7-under before the last few holes got us."

With the help of an eagle on the par-5, 499-yard third hole, McCarty paced the Broncos with his 69. He's tied with a pair of golfers for 11th-place, four shots behind co-leaders Chun An Yu of Arizona State and Kyler Dunkle of Utah.

"Matt played well," Miller noted. "He had a tough break on one hole coming in, but overall he struck the ball well."

Junior Derek Ackerman entered the clubhouse tied for 21st after shooting even-par 71. Senior Hayden Shieh was a stroke back after his 1-over 72 left him tied for 33rd.

Freshman Jack Avrit returned to the lineup to card a 3-over 72 with Will DelBiaggio ending first-round action tied for 62nd at 5-over 76.

"We're not sure about the weather for Tuesday, so we're hoping to play well tomorrow and make a comeback," Miller said.

Tuesday's second round will tee off at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring is available at Golfstat.com.
