Men’s Golfer to Compete in U.S. Amateur Championship

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's golfer Derek Ackerman is set to tee off at next week's U.S. Amateur Championship in Pebble Beach, California.

The seven-day event will be played at Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course, beginning Monday.

Ackerman, who is going to be a senior in the fall, will tee off at 12:45 p.m. on the 10th hole at Pebble Beach Golf Links. On Tuesday, he will start play at 7:30 a.m. on hole No. 1 at Spyglass Hill Golf Course.

The first two rounds will be stroke play, followed by four rounds of match play. The 36-hole final is scheduled Sunday, Aug. 19 at Pebble Beach. Ackermen, a Half Moon Bay, California native, is one of 312 golfers to compete in the 118th edition of the annual championship.

"I'm just really excited especially it being on a course like Pebble Beach. I was telling myself if there's one year to qualify, it's this year because all my buddies are going to be able to come out," said Ackerman after qualifying last month.

He fired a 5-under-par 137 (67-70) at the Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Course, placing second among 140 golfers at the Northern California Golf Association's qualifier.

Ackerman is the first Bronco to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Championship since Drew Miller in 2013.
