Men’s Golf Third After 36 Holes of Anteater Invitational

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Getting back into the swing of things, Santa Clara men's golf shot a two round total of 583 on the first day of the Anteater Invitational, good enough for third-place in the 10-team field. Darkness halted play with four teams yet to complete their second round leaving all statistics unofficial.

The Broncos did complete their second 18 holes and dropped a spot on the leaderboard with a 297. They were 11 swings better over the opening round and find themselves three shots behind Grand Canyon and unofficially 10 strokes back of Cal State Fullerton. The Titans will complete their second round starting at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

"It's nice to get everybody back," head coach Rob Miller said. "It's been awhile since we played 36 holes in one day and I think we got tired and worn down a little bit."

Junior Matt McCarty shot the team's lowest score of the day with a first-round 2-under 70. His second-round 74 left him at even-par after 36 holes.

Freshman Konrad Brauckmeyer matched the 2-under score in the second-round, bringing some relief to the Broncos, who saw their four other team members all score over par. "We needed that," Miller said of the rookie's 70. Brauckmeyer bounced back from a first-round 77 and sits at 3-over 147 for the tournament.

Senior Derek Ackerman (71-75), freshman Zack Kaneshiro (71-78) and junior Will Del Biaggio (74-78) all had as much as a four-shot drop in their score over the second 18 holes.

"We made some mistakes here and there," Miller added. "Overall we're going to be fine. We're within striking distance and we'll make up some strokes tomorrow."

Competing in his first tournament of the year, sophomore Jack Avrit opened with an even-par 72 and followed with a 75 for a 147 total. Berk Harvey carded rounds of 80 and 77 for a 157 total. Both are competing as individuals and their scores do not count toward the team total.

Grand Canyon's Filip Lundell completed 36 holes at 4-under 140 to take the unofficial lead into the clubhouse.

Second round play on the 7,024-yard, par-72 Big Canyon Country Club course will conclude starting at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday with final round commencing immediately afterward. Live scoring updates are available at Golfstat.com.
