SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The first of two consecutive tournaments in Northern California for Santa Clara men's golf gets underway Monday with the opening rounds of the 54-hole Olympic Club Intercollegiate, contested on the 6,840-yard, par-71 Lake Course at the prestigious Olympic Club in San Francisco. The 15-team field will play two rounds on Monday followed by a solo round on Tuesday.
The Broncos look to bounce back from a 12th place showing at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate as they play their third of seven events in the spring season.
It won't be easy in a field that has four teams ranked in the top-55 of the recent Golfstat.com poll. BYU headlines the field at No. 28 with Stanford at No. 31. Tournament host USF (52) and Nevada (55) complete the top of the field. Six teams are among the top-83 with the Broncos entering ranked No. 102.
"BYU is really good," Miller said of Santa Clara's WCC rival. "I don't see anyone beating them. But we're going to try."
Junior Matt McCarty will play out of the No. 1 spot in the lineup with senior Derek Ackerman and freshman Konrad Brauckmeyer behind him. Berk Harvey and Will Del Biaggio will play out of the four and five spots. Jack Avrit will compete as an individual.
"The pressure is off," head coach Rob Miller said. "We're not worried about rankings right now. The guys can be looser and hopefully play better. We need to get momentum going in the right direction, solidify our top three spots to be competitive from here on out and play at a higher level."
Teams and individuals will play 36 holes on Monday with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. PT. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
