STANFORD, Calif. – Saturday's final-round 284 lifted Santa Clara men's golf four spots on the team leaderboard into a top-10 finish among the 27 teams competing at The Goodwin. The Broncos' lowest round of the three-day event put them into eighth place with an 864 total, ahead of seven top-50 ranked teams, including conference foes No. 27 BYU and No. 47 Saint Mary's.
"A top-10 is a good finish no matter who you are," head coach Rob Miller said.
The Broncos beat 12 teams with a higher ranking in the recent Golfstat.com poll.
Individually the Broncos were paced by their top two players. Senior Derek Ackerman, the first-round co-leader, shot 72 on Saturday to finish at 3-over 213. He was joined by teammate Matt McCarty and three other golfers in a tie for 14th.
McCarty matched Santa Clara's low-round of the day with an even-par 70, climbing 13 spots on the leaderboard.
Freshman Konrad Brauckmeyer also shot 70 on Saturday, whittling two shots off his score in each of the last two rounds. Brauckmeyer moved 10 spots up the leaderboard to grab a share of 37th at 6-over 216.
Sophomores Berk Harvey and Jack Avrit had their best rounds of the tournament on Saturday. Harvey carded a 2-over 72 to finish tied for 75th at 233. Avrit improved four-shots over his second-round score to finish with a 54-hole total of 227.
Stanford's Brandon Wu bested teammate David Snyder in a playoff to claim individual medalist honors. The Cardinal also parlayed home course advantage into a team win, bettering No. 6 USC by 18 swings.
The Broncos return to tournament competition on April 8 at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, contested at the Whirlwind Golf Club in Chandler, Ariz.
