STOCKTON, Calif. – Junior Matt McCarty shot a 1-under 71 to lead Santa Clara men's golf to a sixth-place finish with a team total of 1-under 287 after the opening 18 holes of the West Conference Championship tournament.

The Broncos entered the clubhouse 13-shots behind leader San Francisco. BYU is second at 278 with Saint Mary's (283), LMU (285) and Gonzaga (286) rounding out the top-5.

Friday's second round tee times are set for 7:30 a.m. PDT with the Broncos pegging it up at 8:20 a.m. at the 7,133-yard, par-72 Reserve at Spanos Park.

"We didn't do anything special. On this course with this field, that's not good enough," head coach Rob Miller said. "There were tougher conditions in the afternoon. Teeing off last didn't help us. We get the middle tee time tomorrow and we need to take advantage of the better conditions."

All five Broncos finished the opening round within two shots of each other.

McCarty's 71 put him into a tie for 11th with six other golfers, five-shots off the pace set by USF's Tony Briggs.

Konrad Brauckmeyer, Derek Ackerman and Berk Harvey are all one-shot behind McCarty's group tied for 18th after carding an even-par 72. In all, 27 players in the field of 45 scored par or lower over the first 18 holes.

Jack Avrit ended the day at 1-over 73 to grab a share of 28th with a quartet of golfers.

"It was a putting contest today and we didn't putt well enough," Miller said. "It's not where we want to be. We need a couple of guys to shoot in the 60s tomorrow so we can score a good round and put us in a position to win on Saturday. We know it's out there."
