Men’s Golf Duo Reaches Quarterfinals of U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship

BANDON, Ore. – The impressive run for Derek Ackerman and Matt McCarty of Santa Clara men's golf at the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship came to an end on Tuesday.

Ackerman and McCarty were knocked off in quarterfinal match play by Todd Mitchell and Scott Harvey 3 and 2 in an event that began on Saturday with 128 twosomes hitting the Old Macdonald and Pacific Dunes courses at Bandon Dunes Resort.

Mitchell and Harvey birdied four of the final nine holes to reach Wednesday's semifinal round. Ackerman and McCarty were 1 up through seven following birdies on hole Nos. 2 and 5 in a format that features each golfer playing his own ball throughout, and the lower of the partners' scores counting.

In Tuesday morning's round of 16, Ackerman and McCarty needed 20 holes to dispatch Cullen Brasfield and Tyler Moore.

The Bronco pair posted the best score in 36 holes of stroke play at the fifth annual event.

Ackerman and McCarty ended in a three-way tie for first at 13-under-par 128 with the duos of Derek Abel and Christopher Wheeler of Texas, and Troy Vannucci and Vince Kwon of New Jersey.

Ackerman and McCarty posted six birdies and only one bogey on Sunday en route to a 5-under 65 on the Pacific Dunes course. They carded an 8-under 63 on Saturday on Old Macdonald, which was the venue for all match play.

The top 32 twosomes advanced to match play on Monday.

Ackerman and McCarty knocked off Eric Pattenaude and Adam Graham 3 and 1 in the match play opener.
