STOCKTON, Calif. – Junior Berk Harvey shot a 1-under 71 to lead Santa Clara men's golf to a fourth-place tie at 1-over 289 after 18-holes of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational, hosted by the University of the Pacific.
A disastrous last hole dropped the Broncos into a tie with Cal State Northridge and Washington State, seven shots behind clubhouse leader San Jose State.
Finishing up on the ninth hole, every player shot at least one-over. "We need to learn how to play the last hole," head coach Rob Miller said. "A 4-over on that hole took us from second into a tie for fourth."
Still, the Broncos had a consistently solid round on a day when playing conditions were less than ideal. "It was breezy today and that affected some of the teams that got a later start," Miller noted.
Harvey's 71 put him in a tie for ninth with four other players, including teammate Oscar Zimmerman, who is competing as an individual. They trail San Jose State's Sean Yu, who navigated the 7,315-yard, par-72 Reserve at Spanos Park layout to an 8-under 64.
Senior Matt McCarty grabbed a share of 14th with an even-par 72 while sophomore Konrad Brauckmeyer and freshman Alex Conley are tied for 25th at 1-over 73.
Zack Kaneshiro carded a 2-over 74 to tie for 40th in the 96-player field.
"There are 36 holes to go and we're right there," Miller noted of his team's standing. "Conditions should be better for scoring so we'll come out and have a good round tomorrow."
Second round action will commence with tee times from holes No. 1 and No. 10 at 7:45 a.m. PT. Live scoring is available by clicking here.
