Men’s Golf Ends Fall Season With 13th Place Finish At Saint Mary’s Invitational

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Santa Clara men's golf carded a final round 290 to finish their fall season in 13th-place with a 17-over 869 team total at the Saint Mary's Invitational.

"We just never play well here, nobody could putt," head coach Rob Miller said. "We should be better since we are familiar with the course."

The Broncos were one swing better than Tuesday's 291, but they dropped two spots down the leaderboard. Colorado State captured the team title with an 827 total in a field that featured 12 teams ranked among the top-100, including four in the the top-20, of the recent Golfstat.com poll.

Playing in his first tournament of the season, junior Jack Avrit paced the Broncos with two sub-par rounds, including Wednesday's 1-under 70. He finished tied for 29th at 1-over 214.

"It's nice to have Jack back. He played well," Miller said.

Matt McCarty shot a 2-over 73 on Wednesday to finish at 3-over 216 in a tie for 40th. "Matt hit the ball well, he just had a tough time putting," Miller said of his senior.

Following a pair of 72s to open the tournament, sophomore Konrad Brauckmeyer carded a final-round 75 while playing with a sore wrist to finish at 219.

"He gutted it out with a bad wrist," Miller said of Brauckmeyer. "He hurt himself on the last hole yesterday and had to change his grip. He played well considering."

Berk Harvey (76-74-73) and Zack Kaneshiro (76-73-74) both finished at 10-over 223 for a share of 67th.

Competing as an individual, freshman Alex Conley bounced back from Tuesday's 78 to card the Broncos' best round of the tournament with a 3-under 68 on Wednesday. He moved up 23 spots on the leaderboard to claim a share of 53rd.

"Nobody played bad," Miller said. "We just didn't have anyone play great."

The Broncos open their spring season in February at the Orange County Collegiate Classic. It's the first of six tournaments leading up to the WCC Championship. "We have some tough events in the spring so we'll have a chance to overcome this. But it's tough to end the season on a sour note," Miller concluded.
