Men’s Golf Opens Spring Season Monday At Orange County Collegiate Classic

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's golf opens its six-tournament spring season Monday at the 17-team Orange County Collegiate Classic, co-hosted by UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton at the 6,986-yard, par-72 Coto de Caza South Course.

"This is a first-time event so there aren't a lot of highly-ranked teams," head coach Rob Miller said of the competition. "We are one of the higher ranked teams in the field and there are a lot of teams we should beat."

The Broncos enter at No. 76 in the recent Golfstat.com rankings just behind San Francisco (63) and co-host Cal State Fullerton (72). They are the only three teams in the top-100.

It'll be a busy spring for the squad after only four team events during the fall season. A good showing this week will help down the road. "The season gets difficult from here," Miller added. "We're looking for a good start before the heart of the season."

The Broncos will lean on senior Matt McCarty, who was the team's top individual finisher in two fall tournaments, including a runner-up showing at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational in October. He led the team with a 69.83 scoring average across 12 rounds.

The rest of the team consists of junior Zack Kaneshiro and sophomore Konrad Brauckmeyer, who both competed in every team round in the fall. Junior Jack Avrit and freshman Alex Conley complete the five-player contingent. Check out team and player stats from the fall by clicking here.

"The guys are rusty," Miller said about the three month layoff between tournaments. "They are excited to get back to playing."

Time permitting the field will play 36 holes on Monday with a shotgun start format at 8:30 a.m. PT. Live scoring is available by clicking here.
